Dorothy Goldstein-Stahl on Finding Your Team

Last Tuesday, MCMP was joined by Dorothy Goldstein-Stahl, New Business Development Coordinator at the National Basketball Association (NBA). Graduating from Michigan with a Sports Management degree in 2020, Dorothy interned for the Detroit Pistons before joining the NBA. An innovative and progressive company, the NBA boasts one of the youngest and most diverse fan bases with the most followers of any sport. Working in the global partnership area, Dorothy scouts new businesses to bring in to partner with the NBA. Media partnership is a large part of every deal made. Controlled media includes the Bleacher Report, NBA app, and NBA TV, with ABC, TNT, and ESPN broadcasts composing the company’s broadcast media. Evolving media partnerships include digital platforms such as 2k22, Reddit, and FanDuel. Such a robust portfolio of social, digital, and broadcast platforms allows the NBA to reach and engage with fans everywhere and connect the brand’s message to on-court performance. Currently, Dorothy is working with the NBA on improving sustainability and being more environmentally friendly.

Dorothy shared valuable insights with MCMP regarding the importance of cultivating one’s network. Networking helped her get to where she is today, and she cited coffee chats as a crucial component. Speaking on breaking into the sports world without prior knowledge of the business or industry, Dorothy encouraged the jump. She said while internship experience helps, basic experiences that demonstrate teamwork and leadership ability are key. Dorothy encouraged pursuing a variety of types of internships and hands-on experience. Name brands may look good on a resume, but experiences at small businesses can be just as valuable and teach many lessons and transferable skills.

The three largest takeaways from Dorothy’s visit were the necessity of cultivating your network, charting your own course, and creating opportunities for yourself. Dorothy encouraged taking risks and changing career paths if you aren’t proud of the company you're working for or feel a position is not right for you. Personal happiness always takes precedence over a role. She emphasized prioritizing mental health and self-check-ins. Sharing tips for the internship and job search process, Dorothy spoke of the importance of preparation. In-depth research on a company and role before an interview make for more valuable conversations. She also encouraged coming into interviews with pre-written questions to demonstrate your interest and knowledge.

We are so thankful to Dorothy for her time spent with MCMP! Join us Tuesday, November 9th at 7:00 PM to hear from Shayni Shecter, an Associate Strategist at The Collider Lab.
