Meet our Members! Featuring Brooke Halak

Brooke Halak is a junior in the School of Literature, Science, and the Arts at the University of Michigan. She is double majoring in Communications and Political Science with a minor in Public Policy at the Ford School of Public Policy. Brooke is originally from Atlanta, Georgia, but has moved around a bit. She has even lived in Melbourne, Australia for 4 years!

At Michigan, Brooke is on the Legislative Committee for MCMP and is involved in other organizations on campus like The Michigan Daily, Wolv-TV, Empowering Women in Law, and Greek Life. Outside of school, Brooke is a Student Ambassador on the Cindy Axne for Iowa Campaign and a Voting Rights Intern for Public Citizen. She is highly interested in the overlap of communications and policy and would love to do something related to this in her future career.

This summer Brooke was a Public Affairs Intern for SKDK, a public affairs and political advertising agency. She was based in Washington D.C. and spent the summer working with a range of clients to address key audiences and conduct research on advocacy and business issues. Brooke mainly worked within the media, tech, nonprofit, and health/medical industries. During her internship, she developed press lists and drafted pitches, memos, strategic Q&As, and social media posts in order to target key audiences and assist the organization in addressing pertinent issues. Brooke also had the opportunity to monitor legislation and the media, and assist in litigation.

Brooke commented on her experience saying, “This internship was so critical in teaching me the fundamentals of Public Affairs and I made so many invaluable connections with my fellow interns and experienced staff. I had so much fun getting coffee with the employees and learning about their highly impressive and vast experiences working in the White House, Congress, and the media. I had so much fun and am so grateful for this opportunity, as it provided me with so much insight into the field and long-lasting relationships.”
